Christina’s Philosophy: Why I Write & Publish?
Learn more about why being an indie author matters and much more
Why I Write?
I have always found writing as a way to express myself. I think that is why writing can be such a good way to improve our mental health. I know it has helped me.
I have to write because I know that when I do I can tell how I am feeling. It’s a good measure for me to figure out if I need anything to help me. I also believe that many writers have a desire for our voice to be heard. We’re able to figure out our voice through writing it down.
Writing has always inspired me to imagine stories, different perspectives, and figure out aspects of our lives. When I’ve wanted to see something, it’s led me to write it.
It’s never been easy for me to write. Growing up bilingual meant that I learned both English and Spanish through my parents and them reading to me. Later on through school and other aspects. Including being around my family. Now I use both languages more for work.
At school, I was always worried about being good enough even when I wrote. It was only when I was given opportunities and support when I realized that I could be. Later in college and grad school, I was really able to learn the tools to write, especially creatively. I still continue to learn. I’ve learned so much in the process of self-publishing my writing through Kindle Direct Publishing.
Why I Publish?
I could have published my writing traditionally through a small or large publishing company with an agent. It would have taken many more years for something that I didn’t really desire.
I don’t need to be a bestseller or be recognized in some way. As I tried to go through the traditional way, I knew being indie author was what I needed to do for me and my writing. I couldn’t let others decide my writing value.
I self-published as an indie author to allow readers the chance to read my writing from fiction to nonfiction, including poetry. No matter the path, I knew it would take work to make it happen. It’s been my passion to figure how how to make my writing available to readers, including you.
I know now that I couldn’t do it any other way. Now would I love to reach an order a day consistency, yes, but I know that goal will take time. I’ve learned through book marketing resources that my books (and Kindle Vella serials) always have a chance to be read. They have an infinite time. I just have to keep letting readers, like you know about them in different ways. Plus I have to keep writing and publishing too to keep growing as an indie author.
Even with my struggles lately, I keep trying my best to improve as an indie author in different ways from writing to marketing. I’m still writing, but at the moment it’s poetry, nonfiction episodes, and ways to communicate with readers, like you. My hope is that I can get back to fiction this summer, especially once I wrap up my radiation treatments in June.
What does my latest book mean to me?
I’ve learned how to improve my storytelling skills through publishing NEVER FORGET through Kindle Vella as I was working on it (very much like a TV show), but I also learned what could be improved from my debut novel LIBERTY CALLING. Both can be read separately, but they do have connections between them.
I made NEVER FORGET like a TV show because it was inspired by my exploration of writing a TV pilot. While it’s not written exactly like TV scripts, I feel that the first person perspective allows you to dive into the story and figure out things as you go.
I’ve incorporated my cultures, especially Latinx, in this story along with my interest in psychology (which grew from a college class that I had). I wanted to see a Latina, like me, go through college and learn in and outside of class. After I published, I realized that my writing focused a lot on generational trauma and focusing on how characters can make changes for the better.
Let me know what you think of this book by leaving me a review. I hope to reach 34 reviews by my birthday July 3. Each review, including star ratings, matter to me because it impacts future reader interest, but also how Amazon (and other booksellers) make my publishing available outside of my own efforts.
